Facebook Tips: Birthday Fundraisers and your Mission

It’s become a very popular gesture for people to donate their birthday to support their favorite cause—and that should include your Mission.

Facebook makes it easy to donate a birthday on their platform: two weeks prior to their birthday, Facebook users receive a message in their News Feed inviting them to create a fundraiser for their birthday. If your supporters choose your Mission, they can then set up a dedicated page to share their story, tell others about your good work and rally around a fundraising goal.

Ways you can take advantage of birthday Fundraisers

  1. Make sure you are eligible by signing up for Facebook’s Charitable Giving Tools.
  2. Once on board, you can let donors know that they can donate their birthday to your Mission. Use this link to send supporters directly to the birthday fundraiser setup:

  3. You might even ask donors with a birthday in a particular month to raise money for a specific, timely need. Maybe coats and hot meals to help homeless neighbors make it through the winter months?

Friends can donate in a few taps without leaving Facebook, making it easier to collect donations. Plus, each time someone donates, they are prompted to share and invite their friends. Shares and re-shares also contain a donate button making it easy for others to support your cause.

Data suggests that these donations are motivated by personal relationships with the fundraiser host, rather than the relationship between the donor and your Mission. Because of this, it’s smart to have a strategy in place for engaging with these new donors and cultivating relationships with them over time.
